We’re Hiring: Managing Editor 14 Month Maternity Leave Role

Pantera Press is seeking an experienced and accomplished person to manage our editorial team, overseeing a list of approximately 25–30 books a year across all genres, including a small number of illustrated titles. For the right candidate there would be opportunities to join the Leadership Team. To be considered for the role, you must have excellent organisational skills, a keen eye for detail, project management experience, exceptional editing talents, and the ability to manage an editorial team.

Start Date: 19th January 2022

End Date: 17th March 2023


Role Description

Scheduling and project management:

  • Overall responsibility for managing and balancing the workload of the editorial team including creating and updating schedules and monitoring deadlines for all editorial projects
  • Ongoing project management of editorial deliverables including MS delivery, edits, blurbs, author bios, covers and budgets
  • Work closely with publishers, sales, marketing and publicity
  • Develop best practices to optimise our editorial processes
  • Chair the weekly editorial and production meeting

 Author care:

  • Manage a smaller list of approximately 8 Pantera Press authors (predominantly commercial fiction):
    • Provide guidance, structural feedback and edits
    • Pitch manuscripts at acquisitions meetings
    • Brief covers and illustrations
    • Create collateral such as blurbs, taglines and author bios


  • Copyedit approximately 6 books per year (predominantly commercial fiction)
  • Project edit approximately 8 books per year, including briefing and liaising with freelancers
  • Occasional proofreading
  • Assist with PDF checks and sign-off

People management:

  • Manage an editorial team
  • Overseeing the implementation of the Acquisitions Strategy
  • Development of more junior editorial staff
  • Participate in regular management meetings
